National Intelligence candidate Tulsi Gabbard cleared yet another confirmation hurdle in the Senate on Monday night.
Last Tuesday, after Gabbard's nomination was approved by the Intelligence Election Committee's partisan vote, the Senate voted between 52 and 46 votes to call for a Cloture on Gabbard's nomination. The Senate could potentially win Gabbard's final confirmation vote in the coming days.
Gabbard was considered one of President Donald Trump's most controversial candidates, but she has made great strides to secure support on the Senate side.
After a heated confirmation hearing on the hill, several senators raised concerns about Gabbard's appointment.
Maine's Republican senator voted against Trump's Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses, but many were one of the committee members who were attracting attention before the vote. Collins has a history of hitting his own party, but he ends up supporting Gabbard on the eve of the committee's vote.
Similarly, Republican Sen. Todd Young of Indiana was considered a holdout for Gabbard until 11 hours. During her hearing, the young Gabbard grilled about her attitude towards NSA leaker Edward Snowden, prompting a tense exchange. Nevertheless, Young finally came out support Gabbard's after she reveals her stance on a particular “commitment.”
“Now that I have secured these commitments, I look forward to supporting Tarsi's appointment and working with her to protect our national security,” Young said.
