Police Raids Target LGBTQI+ Groups in Turkey

In Turkey, a crackdown on LGBTQI+ groups has led to the detention of 26 individuals amid allegations of homosexual prostitution and obscenity. This operation, which began on Friday, also saw police raiding the offices of six related associations.

Reports from Reuters indicate that the crackdown is framed as an effort to uphold family values. The Istanbul chief prosecutor’s office disclosed that actions took place across 12 provinces, involving 38 suspects and resulting in the seizure of drugs, digital devices, smuggled alcohol, and a firearm.

Kaos GL, a gay rights organization based in Ankara, claimed that around 50 activists were detained, which is a notably higher number than that reported by the prosecutor’s office. This includes over 10 activists who were arrested during police raids at their residences.

Additionally, authorities restricted access to numerous websites and social media accounts connected to LGBTQI+ organizations and advocates, which have faced scrutiny from the government previously.

The Turkish Human Rights Association commented on the situation, stating that the operation is fundamentally a form of state-led discrimination rather than a protective measure called “My Family is Safe.”

This crackdown is not an isolated incident; it follows a pattern of targeting LGBTQI+ individuals in Muslim-majority nations. In July, both Turkey and Egypt barred a cruise ship carrying 2,000 gay men from entering their waters, insisting that the vessel did not reflect societal values or morals.

The situation escalated when authorities labeled the cruise as “madness” due to the lifestyle of the passengers, which they claim contradicts their moral and family values. The cruise had been marketed as a vibrant voyage from Athens to Venice, promising unforgettable experiences and parties.
