Military Escalation and Turkish Support for Pakistan
Recently, there has been a significant increase in military tensions along the Line of Control (LOC) in Pakistan, specifically in Jammu and Kashmir, coinciding with Turkey’s involvement in other regional conflicts. Reports indicate that Pakistan has utilized 300 to 400 drones provided by Turkey to target both military and civilian areas in India.
The drones reportedly executed numerous incursions into Indian airspace across the western border, stretching from Leh in Ladakh to Sacreek in Gujarat, affecting 36 locations. This information was shared at a press conference regarding Operation Sindoah.
According to the government, the Indian army successfully used speed and non-physical methods to counter many of these drones. Forensic experts are currently investigating the wreckage of the drones, which preliminary evidence suggests are Turkish-made “ASIS Guard Songar” drones.
While Turkey has not condemned the terrorist activities targeting civilians in Jammu and Kashmir, it has expressed condolences to the families of Indian tourists killed by terrorists linked to Pakistan, all while maintaining strong support for Pakistan.
Concerns About Turkish Intentions
There are growing concerns regarding Turkey’s motives and its relationship with Pakistan, illustrated by various recent actions:
- Turkey has consistently provided moral, economic, and military support to Pakistan, reinforcing its narrative in Jammu and Kashmir. Following a recent terrorist attack in Pahargam, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif, expressing solidarity and gratitude for Turkey’s ongoing support for Kashmir.
- While the world largely stood with India after the Pahargam attacks, reports emerged that Turkey sent significant military supplies to Pakistan amid Islamabad’s fears of Indian actions against terrorism.
- Six Turkish military aircraft allegedly arrived in Pakistan loaded with weapons and military gear. Although Ankara denied sending military equipment, they could not refute the presence of these aircraft as confirmed by global aviation monitoring systems.
- Turkey also dispatched a naval warship, the TCG Bykada, to Karachi, which both countries described as a “routine visit” and a “good-intentional visit.”
- Following India’s Operation Sindore, which targeted terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Turkey aligned itself with Pakistan’s narrative, with President Erdogan expressing solidarity with Pakistan during a conversation with PM Shebaz Sharif.
- According to external sources, on the night of May 8-9, the 300-400 Turkish drones launched by Pakistan engaged in further airspace violations as part of intelligence-gathering actions, aiming at both civilian infrastructure and military installations in India.
- In terms of military transactions, Pakistan officially purchased $5.16 million worth of Turkish weapons ammunitions last year. Turkey has become a crucial defense ally for Pakistan, supplying various advanced drones and naval assets to enhance Pakistan’s military capabilities.
The deepening ties between Turkey and Pakistan, especially concerning terrorism and Kashmir, are closely watched by India.
