Turmoil Erupts as Democratic Representative Yells at Scott Bessent for One Full Minute

Confrontation Between Rep. Gregory Meeks and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent

During a heated exchange on Wednesday, Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks from New York confronted Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, persistently yelling for over a minute as Bessent attempted to respond to a question. The tension stemmed from Meeks’s concerns regarding a company from the United Arab Emirates that had covertly acquired shares in President Donald Trump’s cryptocurrency enterprise. He pressed Bessent on whether he would initiate a thorough investigation into the situation, refusing to let the secretary provide a clear answer.

“All you have to ask is yes or no,” Meeks insisted, clearly frustrated. Bessent started to explain the independence of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, but Meeks interrupted him multiple times, demanding accountability as the Secretary of the Treasury. The exchange highlighted Meeks’s growing impatience with Bessent’s responses, which he viewed as evasive.

Meeks charged, “He didn’t answer my questions,” emphasizing that he simply wanted a straightforward response. “It was a yes or no answer.” He urged Bessent to stop defending Trump, stressing the importance of working for the American people instead of engaging in cover-ups.

The dispute also mentioned Bessent’s travel to Venezuela for former President Hugo Chavez’s funeral, during which he was reportedly under scrutiny for his financial dealings. Additionally, he has had contentious interactions with other Democrats, notably California Governor Gavin Newsom, whom he has criticized in various heated remarks.
