Speaking on CNN’s “AC360” broadcast Thursday, CNN national correspondent Kristen Holmes said the turnout at a rally held in the Bronx that day by former President Donald Trump, a potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate, was “larger than Democrats would have liked,” and included “a large number” of people who said they voted for President Joe Biden in 2020 but were now looking for a different candidate due to dissatisfaction with the state of the economy.
“Certainly, I think it drew a larger crowd than Democrats would have liked, given that this is one of the most heavily Democratic counties in the nation,” Holmes said.
After noting that Trump rallies often feature people who aren’t from the area where the rally is held and travel from far away to attend the rally, he said that “there were actually a lot of people from the Bronx” at the event.
“Even before we came to the rally, we spoke to a lot of people outside of our community and the reaction was … really mixed,” she added, noting that there were “a lot” of former Biden voters who were “very unhappy” with the economic situation and looking for alternatives to Biden.
