Ocasio-Cortez Critiques Major Immigration Bill
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) expressed her concern over the passage of what she called the “big and beautiful bill,” emphasizing its impact on immigration enforcement and deportation practices.
In a recent message on Bluesky, she pointed out that the bill would provide more funding to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) than the combined total for the FBI, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, the DEA, and various other agencies. This disparity, she suggests, is alarming.
“I think, honestly, no one’s really ready for what they’ve done with ICE. It’s not just a routine budget increase; it’s a massive expansion. Comparing it to the FBI or DEA—it’s like what’s happening now is kids’ play,” she remarked.
Ocasio-Cortez warned that the implications of this bill could lead to job losses and even fatalities. “There’s a wave of chaos stemming from all of this. Lives are at stake, and I see the repercussions firsthand,” she added, suggesting a disturbing lack of safeguards in the policy.
“No one seems prepared for what’s happening with ICE. This is not just another budget increment; it’s an explosive change. People are vanishing amid all this,” she noted.
“It’s disheartening to witness the chaos unleashed. Lives are in jeopardy, and my own ability to provide for myself is threatened. This feeds into a cycle of corruption. There are no checks in place—it’s a disaster,” she lamented.
As noted by various reports, this recent legislation, often described as the culmination of President Donald Trump’s initiatives in office, aims to fulfill longstanding campaign promises. The bill passed in the House with a narrow margin of 218 to 214, with only two Republicans, Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Thomas Massey (R-KY), voting in favor.
This aligns with Trump’s Independence Day aspirations, which some media outlets had previously dismissed as unattainable.
