Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Now available on Netflix
Following 2021’s unforgettable Beverly Hills Cop, it’s fair to say Eddie Murphy is now in full resurgence mode. It was only a matter of time before he made a sequel to Beverly Hills Cop, and now, in his directorial debut, Mark Molloy has made it happen. Old favorites like Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, and Paul Reiser return, along with newcomers like Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige. Of course, the real attraction is the return of Murphy as the restless, jokey Axel Foley. Can he recapture his old energy? Stuart Heritage

At first glance, this psychological thriller seems like a Carroll knockoff, replete with sultry, smoky mid-century stares from its stars Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway. But that’s only half the story. The film plunges into its own quagmire of obsession and violence. Half the fun is getting the rug pulled out from under you with a twist that would be rude to spoil, but it’s worth the price of admission alone. It’s a delightfully tense and darkly sexy way to spend a few hours. SH
