Puppies Rescued from Neglect on Long Island

Over 20 puppies have been saved from a home on Long Island where conditions were alarming, marking the second rescue of this kind in eight years. Officials noted that an illness had been an issue before as well.

Suffolk County animal rescue officials reported that the Bayshore home was in such poor condition that SPCA staff had to wear Hazmat suits while executing a search warrant on the property. It was described as “toxic” due to elements like ammonia, feces, flies, and even dead rodents. Detective Sergeant Joseph Garante remarked that it was “everything you might imagine” in such a neglected home.

He added that it was uninhabitable for both humans and animals. Roygross, the SPCA Chief, mentioned that the sheer number of dogs being removed was overwhelming local shelters, making it challenging to accommodate them all.

The homeowner, 66-year-old Robin Mills, chose not to comment when approached about the situation. Back in 2017, she faced 22 misdemeanor charges for animal cruelty after authorities rescued 21 dogs and exotic birds from her home due to prior complaints.

Chief Gross recalled his previous visit in 2017, saying that the stench was unbearable. He noted, “It makes you nauseous. You’ve got to step outside for fresh air.” He expressed confusion over why someone would allow such neglect to happen.

Mills reportedly claimed she didn’t live in the house and was only in the backyard when authorities arrived this time. On this visit, SPCA and officers discovered 25 dogs, primarily mixed Pomeranian terriers around a year old.

Neighbors have long complained about Mills, citing constant noises and a pervasive foul smell. One resident, Martin Forello, insisted that something needs to be done, especially since conditions have worsened since the last intervention. “She’s scary,” he added.

Another anonymous neighbor described the situation as “hell,” asserting that Mills was dangerous and refused to change her ways, even driving a car filled with garbage that blocked her view.

The SPCA confirmed that the case will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office for potential charges.
