Controversial Call Leads to Ejection of Twins’ Manager Baldelli
In a tense matchup on Thursday night, Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli expressed his frustration towards home plate umpire John Bacon following a critical call involving Ryan Jeffers, which contributed to the Twins’ 4-3 loss in 11 innings.
Things escalated when the ump ruled that Jeffers had fouled a ball off the glove of Tigers catcher Dillon Dingler, resulting in a pivotal first out during the bottom of the 11th inning. Baldelli, believing the ball had hit the ground, confronted the umpire and sought a review of the play.
Baldelli didn’t hold back his emotions, reportedly yelling, “It’s not the way, you messed it up,” as he threw his hat onto the field in frustration before being ejected from the game.
He continued his tirade, saying, “You tightened it up, man,” expressing his disbelief over the call that he felt affected the game’s outcome. After being thrown out, Baldelli kicked the dirt around home plate and voiced his concerns even louder, asserting that such a crucial moment can’t be overlooked.
Despite Baldelli’s protests, the decision stood, and he was ultimately escorted out of the game by the umpires. This ejection marked Baldelli’s fourth of the season, showcasing how high tensions were running in the game.
As the game concluded, the Twins suffered a defeat, with the Tigers managing to secure the win thanks to a check swing that caught the Twins off guard.
Speaking to reporters afterward, Baldelli expressed his disbelief over the umpire’s judgment. “No one in the stadium could confidently say that ball didn’t hit the ground,” he said. His main request was for the ump to reconsider the call, which he deemed significant for the game’s outcome.
He added, “It’s crucial for everyone in the ballpark to get the call right, especially in such a pivotal moment.”
