Hasan Piker Talks Communism and Socialism on Podcast
Left-leaning Twitch streamer Hasan Piker recently shared his perspective on communism, describing it as an “honorable ultimate goal” of socialism for the working class. This conversation took place during a podcast with comedian Hasan Minhaj, where they explored various progressive issues, including what socialism really means.
Piker explained, “Socialism reorients the political landscape, separating us from those who own the means of production and hold significant power. It brings back a sense of democracy to the greatest class.” Minhaj then asked him a simple yet profound question: “How is socialism different from communism?”
“Communism should be seen as the final stage,” Piker clarified. “It’s the end goal, a kind of evolution towards a stateless, moneyless, classless society. But we haven’t actually seen real communism happen; it just hasn’t existed.” He acknowledged that countries like China and Cuba have Communist parties but argued there has never been a true “communist formation.” He expressed that he has no shame in being called a communist, seeing it as a commendable aspiration.
“I’m not saying I’m a communist, but if someone calls me that, I’m fine with it. I think it’s quite cool. It’s like the universe of ‘Star Trek’.” This comparison piqued his interest in discussing how those ideals could transform society.
At 33, Piker is a Turkish-American commentator based in California, known for stirring controversy with his views. He regularly engages with a massive audience, frequently drawing over a million viewers to his Twitch streams. His opinions often spark debates, as seen when he minimized Hamas’ actions during a terrorist attack and commented on U.S. involvement in events like 9/11.
His strong advocacy for socialism has not come without scrutiny. In 2021, he faced backlash for purchasing a nearly $3 million home in West Hollywood. In his defense, he argued it was simply part of life in Los Angeles amid challenging housing market conditions.
Piker remarked, “Living here is tough. The housing market is quite broken. Should I keep renting? Am I supposed to just be a gentleman about it? Does this really solve anything?”
