Tragic Incidents at Carnival’s New Bahamas Destination
In a tragic turn of events, just weeks after launching its first cruise, two Americans lost their lives while visiting a private destination in the Bahamas operated by Carnival. The deceased, a 79-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman, died in separate incidents occurring on a Friday at this “private tourist destination.”
First responders reported that the man, while snorkeling, was unresponsive by the beach. Lifeguards pulled him from the water and attempted CPR, but unfortunately, he did not survive. Similarly, the woman was rescued from a pool after becoming unresponsive while swimming. Lifeguards also performed CPR on her, but she too could not be saved.
An autopsy is currently being carried out as part of the ongoing investigation into these incidents. A spokesperson from Carnival confirmed the fatalities and mentioned that both the beach and lagoon had lifeguards and medical teams present during the emergencies.
According to Carnival’s spokesperson, “One guest was sailing with his family in Mardi Gras, while the other was with family in the uplift of the Carnival.” He added that their thoughts and prayers are with the affected families during this difficult time.
The Celebration Key, which welcomed its first guests on July 19, features various attractions, including a massive $600 million sand castle, thrilling water slides, shopping areas, basketball courts, and an adults-only retreat.
Carnival also anticipates significant economic benefits from the Celebration Key, projecting an increase in visitors to Grand Bahama Island from 2 million annually to 4 million by 2028, which will create numerous long-term employment opportunities.
