Two Dead, 42 Hurt in New York Bus Crash Carrying Students

Two people were killed and 42 injured when a New York charter bus carrying students from Long Island to band camp capsized on Thursday.

Officials said the crash Occurred on Interstate 84 just outside of Middletown, Orange County at 1:12 p.m., according to PIX11.

“According to the school district, it was one of six buses carrying students from Farmingdale High School to band camp in Greeley in northeastern Pennsylvania,” the paper noted. “Five students were hospitalized in critical condition after the crash, officials said.”

The two people killed in the accident were later identified as 43-year-old Gina Pelletiere and 77-year-old Beatrice Ferrari. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) spoke out about the accident, saying defective tires likely played a role.

“Imagine the fear, the screams, and the aftermath when high school students, many of them freshmen, were surrounded by this chaos,” Hochul said.

“We were briefed on the tragedy in which a bus carrying high school students was involved in an accident in Orange County, resulting in the death of one injured person,” Hochul added. “We are grateful to the first responders whose quick actions saved lives, and we will continue to provide any assistance needed. Our hearts are with everyone affected by this terrible situation. ”

Hochul called It’s the “day of fear.”

“Certainly there are families who are grieving today,” she said. “We have families, we have schools, we have school districts, we have counties, and really our entire state is grieving right now.”

The injured students were sent to the State University of New York Orange campus, where they were reunited with their parents.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman called the incident a tragedy.

“What started out as an incredibly beautiful day in New York State…They had fun plans for the weekend…Unfortunately the day ended in tragedy for many,” Blakeman said. “Our hearts go out to the Farmingdale High School family.”
