Two Dead, Five Injured After Shooting in Democrat-Controlled D.C.

Two people were shot dead and five others injured early Sunday in Democratic-controlled Washington, DC, police said, but the gunman remains at large and has not been identified.

Police said the shooting occurred at 3 a.m. at the intersection of 7th Street NW and P Street NW, about four blocks from Mount Vernon Square near the Kennedy Recreation Center, and the suspect fled on foot.

“We are appealing to anyone who has information related to this incident or who may have witnessed the incident to contact the Metropolitan Police Department,” Chief Jeffrey Carroll said at a press conference Sunday morning. .

Investigators were searching for a black man of “average build, light pants and a blue shirt,” the Metropolitan Police Department said. Said With X.

“He was last seen walking southbound on 7th Street NW,” police said. “Don’t take any action, call 911.”

UPI report Officers responded to the scene and found six adults, all of whom had been shot. Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, Carroll said.

Police said a seventh victim showed up alone at the hospital Sunday afternoon.

The deceased victims were identified Sunday night as Anthony Brown, 32, of Southeast Washington, D.C., and Jay Lux, 32, of Baltimore, Maryland.

The motive for the shooting is still under investigation, but the Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement that preliminary investigation suggests “one or more suspects may have intentionally fired a gun at the victim.”

The department is offering a reward of up to $20,500 per victim and $50,000 in total for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

The identities of the other victims are not being released pending notification of next of kin.

Sunday’s shootings come as homicides in Washington, D.C., are up 35% this year compared to the same period in 2023, according to police department crime statistics.

According to statistics, there were 274 murders in Washington, D.C., in all of 2023, an increase of 35% from 2022.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department’s statistics for 2023:

  • robbery 69% increase
  • violent Crime increased by 40%
  • carjacking jumped 89%

One study ranked Washington DC as the least desirable place to live due to its high crime rate and cost of living.
