Health Officials Report Vibrio vulnificus Cases

NEW ORLEANS — Health officials have reported two fatalities linked to Louisiana oysters contaminated with a serious bacterial infection known as Vibrio vulnificus. According to WBRZ, these oysters were harvested locally before being served in restaurants across both Louisiana and Florida.

In addition to the two deaths, another 14 people became infected after consuming the oysters, as reported by our partners.

This year has seen a total of 34 infections and six deaths due to Vibrio vulnificus, a record high for Louisiana in the past decade.

“It’s just prolific right now,” said Jennifer Armentor, head of the molluscan shellfish program at the Louisiana Department of Health. She noted this during a recent meeting with the Louisiana Oyster Task Force.

Seafood businesses in the region maintain strict harvesting and safety protocols. Furthermore, restaurants are legally required to inform customers about the risks associated with eating raw oysters and seafood.

Precautions for Safety

According to the Louisiana Department of Health, here are some precautions that may help keep you safe:

  • Avoid brackish or saltwater if you have any wounds, or at least ensure they are securely covered with waterproof bandages.
  • If cuts or wounds have been exposed to brackish or saltwater or raw seafood, wash them thoroughly with soap and water.
  • If you notice any skin infections, inform your healthcare provider about potential exposure to brackish or saltwater or raw seafood.
  • Exercise caution when eating raw or undercooked seafood, especially if you are pregnant or have underlying health conditions.
  • Always wash your hands with soap and water after handling raw shellfish.
  • Be careful not to let raw seafood or its juices come into contact with cooked seafood.

For Those at Higher Risk

If you belong to a higher-risk group for severe infection, consider the following recommendations:

  • Wear protective clothing and shoes while in brackish or saltwater to guard against cuts.
  • Use gloves when handling raw seafood.
