Two Democrats excluded from immigration court where Brad Lander was arrested

Two Democratic lawmakers recently attempted to access the Manhattan immigration court but were denied entry. Dan Goldman (NY-10) and Jerry Nadler (NY-12) aimed to inspect the federal facility, as reports indicated that some immigrants were being forced to sleep on benches at 26 Federal Square for several days.

“We just established a constitutional watchdog for ICE and its detention centers,” Goldman stated, after being released without charges a few hours later. This occurred shortly after Lander’s arrest by ICE agents in a very public incident.

“Despite the law allowing us to appear without advance notice, we were denied access. We cannot accept this,” he added.

Goldman pointed out that Lander’s arrest in the same location raises serious concerns about the conditions in which immigrants are held. “We won’t stop until these non-criminal immigrants are treated fairly and we understand what happens inside these detention facilities,” he emphasized.

Instead of gaining entry, the legislators met with Bill Joyce, the deputy director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the U.S.

Fortunately for Goldman and Nadler, they avoided being arrested like Lander, who had tried to help immigrants during their court hearings.

“Everyone noticed Brad’s side after he missed the spotlight yesterday,” one observer commented on the situation.

A spokesperson for ICE did not respond to inquiries about the incident.

Goldman’s office dismissed any idea that the lawmakers sought to exploit media attention following Lander’s arrest, stating that they had communicated their intention to visit ICE in advance.

Lander, who is also running for mayor, was detained by ICE agents on Tuesday while observing an immigration court case.

He was seen linking arms with an immigrant named Eduardo and vocally protesting when agents tried to escort Eduardo away after his hearing.

Initially charged with assaulting a federal officer, Lander’s charges were later dismissed when he appeared alongside Governor Kathy Hochul a few hours later.

Hochul had been in New York for public events related to the topic of arrests.

The Trump administration has significantly ramped up its deportation efforts, targeting around 3,000 undocumented immigrants each day.

However, the focus appears to be shifting from apprehending violent criminals to rounding up individuals in public spaces. “It’s all about the numbers,” one ICE insider mentioned. “They’re prioritizing quantity over quality.”
