Two human traffickers sentenced for the deaths of 53 migrants in Texas

Human Smugglers Sentenced for 2022 Tragedy

Two individuals involved in a human smuggling case linked to the deaths of 53 immigrants in Texas have been sentenced. Authorities announced the convictions following a federal trial in March. Felipe Orduna Torres, 32, and Armando Gonzalez Ortega, 55, have both been implicated in the smuggling operation near San Antonio.

On Friday, Orduna-Torres, a Mexican national who was in the U.S. illegally, received two life sentences plus an additional 20 years for his third conviction. Gonzalez Ortega, also a Mexican national living illegally in the United States, was sentenced to 87 years and five years in prison.

Additionally, Judge Orlando Garcia imposed a fine of $250,000 on both men.

This incident is noted as one of the deadliest attempts to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. Judge Garcia expressed his dismay, stating, “You’ll never see the light of day, so embarrassing. You could have been doing something else.” He made it clear that smuggling operations leading to death and injury will have serious consequences.

Reports indicate that 66 migrants were crammed into air-conditioned tractor trailers, even as outside temperatures approached 100°F. Some passengers lost consciousness, while others tried desperately to escape their dire circumstances.

Tragically, 48 immigrants died before the truck even reached San Antonio, with additional fatalities occurring after they arrived at a local hospital. The total count of deceased included six children and a pregnant woman, with migrants coming from various countries, including Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

A powerful statement from the mother of one victim captured the immense grief, saying, “This is the biggest pain in my life… it never goes away… I can’t believe I had to bury my son. Even if I’m alive, I seem to be dead.”

Both Orduna-Torres and Gonzalez-Ortega faced multiple charges, including orchestrating the transportation of immigrants, as well as the transport of deceased and seriously injured individuals.
