Two Men Charged for Alleged Espionage in London

Two individuals have been formally charged under national security laws for purportedly spying on various targets in London on behalf of Iranian intelligence, according to prosecutors.

Earlier this month, London’s counter-terrorism police, along with the Crown Prosecution Service, arrested these men, who have since been brought before Westminster Crown Court.

Nematollah Shahsavani, a 40-year-old Iranian-British dual national residing in North Finchley, and Alireza Farasati, a 22-year-old Iranian national living in Edgware, have been accused of activities that allegedly support a foreign intelligence service, in violation of section 3 of the National Security Act 2023.

A representative from the Crown Prosecution Service mentioned the men are suspected of “gathering intelligence and reconnaissance of targets” for Iran. Prosecutors believe they were aware that their actions could significantly aid foreign intelligence operations tied to the UK, under section 3(2) of the National Security Act 2023.

The Metropolitan Police described the charges as “extremely serious” and stated that the investigation had been quite complex.

The Westminster Magistrates’ Court revealed that both men were suspected of conducting surveillance on specific locations in London as instructed by Iranian intelligence last summer. Reports indicated that equipment seized from the suspects contained a list of sites to monitor, including the Israeli embassy, Britain’s oldest synagogue, and a community center.

The Community Security Trust, a well-known charity focused on protecting British Jews from terrorism and anti-Semitism, along with a resident from Colchester, were also mentioned as targets in the court proceedings.

Shahsavani and Farasati have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to reappear at the Old Bailey Central Criminal Court on April 17.

They were arrested on March 6, as part of a raid that reportedly involved a total of ten arrests, including four on espionage-related charges. Others were detained for assisting in criminal activities but have since been released without any charges.
