Two killed, 35 injured in Georgia neighborhood party shooting: 'You couldn't tell where it was coming from'

Deadly Shooting at Georgia Block Party

Two individuals have lost their lives, and over 35 others have been injured following a shooting that occurred during a block party in South Georgia, according to authorities.

Gunfire broke out around 1:25 a.m. on Sunday in Vienna, Georgia, during a gathering that spanned four blocks. Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy provided details at a press conference held later that evening.

The deceased have been identified as 21-year-old Ja’Quavion Jackson and 23-year-old Macaleb Jackson. Sheriff Peavy noted that, at this time, there is no indication that the victims knew one another.

Most of those injured sustained gunshot wounds, with ages ranging from 14 to 51 years. Their conditions varied from critical to stable, as stated by Peavy.

The sheriff remarked that his deputies were nearby when the shooting began.

“All of a sudden, you know, gunfire erupts,” he described. “Our deputies … were just about on scene when it happened.”

He added that the scene was chaotic, making it difficult to discern what was happening.
“There were so many people, and it was just hard to figure out what was going on,” Peavy expressed, noting that more shots were fired while officers were present.

“You didn’t know where it was coming from,” he further explained.

In response to the incident, the sheriff called for assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies.

Authorities believe there is no ongoing threat to public safety, although the investigation is still in its early stages.

Chris Hosey, Director of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), did not disclose a motive for the shooting but indicated that investigators are actively gathering more information. When questioned about any suspects, Hosey mentioned that they are interviewing several individuals.

Reports suggest that the block party was part of a homecoming celebration for Dooly County High School, although it wasn’t officially school-sponsored. Dooly County Superintendent of Schools Sherrod Willaford addressed the situation in a statement, highlighting the potential impact on students and staff.

“The Dooly County School System is deeply saddened by the overnight shooting in Vienna,” Willaford said. “Our hearts are with the families grieving the loss of loved ones, those who were injured, and everyone affected by this tragedy.”

Authorities are urging witnesses to come forward to help in the investigation as they piece together the events surrounding this tragic incident.
