Recently, two Mexican men were apprehended in connection with the murder of a 43-year-old woman in Texas. Enrique Gomez Urbina, 21, was taken into custody by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. He faces charges of first-degree murder and resisting arrest, as reported by Austin police.
Gomez Urbina has an active immigration hold while the murder investigation unfolds. His accomplice, Jesús Lamas Yanez, 48, is currently wanted by Mexican authorities for weapons-related offenses and has been extradited back to Mexico.
On October 6, a tire shop employee discovered the body of a woman, later identified as Mary Gonzalez, in a wooded area behind the store. The police noted that she had suffered “obvious trauma” and was shot, according to the Travis County Coroner’s Office.
Before being stopped by police, which happened about a mile from the crime scene, Gomez Urbina was pulled over the night before for failing to stop at a stop sign. During the traffic stop, officers found an open beer bottle and a Glock handgun, along with ammunition in his vehicle.
Surveillance footage indicated a vehicle matching the description of Gomez Urbina’s car was present near the crime scene shortly before the body was discovered. In addition, a Modelo beer bottle and spent shell casings similar to those found in his car were located at the site of the murder.
U.S. Marshals reported that both men tried to evade capture after the crime. However, there is still uncertainty regarding when and where Gomez Urbina entered the United States illegally.
Currently, he remains in the Travis County Jail, with bail set at $254,000. The Department of Homeland Security has not yet provided comments on the situation.
