Two police officers in Philadelphia are currently hospitalized after being shot early Saturday while responding to a call in the western part of the city. One of the officers, a 40-year-old father of two, was shot three times, while the other, a 33-year-old father of five, suffered twelve gunshot wounds, according to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel during a news briefing.
Bethel expressed immense pride in the officers, stating their commitment to serving and protecting the community. “They step into danger and put their lives on the line for this job,” he remarked, appealing for prayers and support for the injured officers and their families. The incident occurred just after 12:20 a.m. at 140 North 52nd Street, where the officers were dispatched following reports of a man brandishing a firearm on a porch.
About half an hour later, the officers approached the scene and came under heavy gunfire. Shortly thereafter, additional officers and a SWAT team found the original responding officers on the porch, both injured from the shooting. Bethel noted that the suspect also fired upon two additional officers but was eventually located by the SWAT team hiding in a tree and taken into custody.
Following the incident, both injured officers were transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for surgical treatment. The specifics of their conditions aren’t yet known, but Bethel noted the community is hopeful they will recover from this severe situation.
Reports indicate that the suspect ambushed the officers by running down an alley and opening fire. Bethel confirmed that the suspect was found with two handguns and a shotgun, including one firearm that belonged to an injured officer. The investigation is ongoing, and officials from the Philadelphia Police Department have not provided further comments at this time.
