Tragedy Strikes University of Mississippi Community
The University of Mississippi is mourning the loss of two undergraduate students who were recently found dead in unrelated incidents. The students have been identified as 18-year-old Aidan Hamilton from Englewood, Colorado, and 20-year-old Robert Strang from Atlanta, Georgia. Their deaths, which occurred on a Monday, have led to heightened concern on campus and prompted investigations by both local and state law enforcement agencies.
Emergency responders found Hamilton at Stewart Hall around 1:30 p.m. after receiving reports about a potential overdose involving an unresponsive individual. Later that same day, Strang’s body was discovered at a residential property off campus in Oxford.
The Lafayette County Coroner’s Office confirmed the deaths, and university officials have expressed their sorrow, offering condolences to the families affected by this tragedy.
As the community continues to grieve, both the university and the families of the deceased have requested privacy during this difficult time.
The circumstances of the students’ deaths have drawn public attention, especially after the Lafayette County Metro Narcotics Unit issued a warning about packaged kratom. This herbal product, native to Southeast Asia, interacts with opioid receptors and was found at both scenes of the incidents.
Detectives have traced the kratom to a retail store, despite existing local bans in both Oxford and Lafayette County against it.
Understanding Kratom
Kratom’s effects can vary based on dosage. At lower doses, typically between one and five grams, it tends to act as a stimulant, boosting physical energy and focus while also enhancing sociability and creating a mild euphoric feeling. In contrast, at higher doses ranging from five to fifteen grams, or in concentrated forms, it resembles opioid effects, providing pain relief, relaxation, and emotional numbness.
However, higher doses can lead to adverse side effects including nausea, dizziness, and rapid heart rate, along with potential mental confusion and anxiety. In extreme cases, especially when combined with other substances or taken excessively, it can cause serious issues like respiratory depression and dependency.
Authorities have stressed that while kratom was found at both death scenes, there is currently no solid evidence linking it to the fatalities or suggesting any connection between the two incidents. As a precaution, law enforcement has advised the public to avoid kratom.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we encourage everyone to avoid Kratom and any other medication or substance that was not prescribed to you or obtained from a trusted, regulated source,” stated the authorities.

In response to the tragic events, state officials are working to uncover the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Governor Tate Reeves has expressed support for the victims’ families and announced an ongoing collaboration between the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics with local police.
State agencies are prioritizing toxicology testing for both students, though officials anticipate that initial autopsy and toxicology results will take weeks. Meanwhile, university leaders are urging students and the public to refrain from spreading unverified information on social media while investigations continue.
