Near Miss at JFK Airport

On Monday afternoon, two passenger planes nearing John F. Kennedy International Airport came alarmingly close to a collision, prompting them to abort their landings. They were reportedly less than 400 feet apart yet managed to avert disaster.

According to data from FlightRadar24, an American Airlines flight and an Air Canada flight were in the midst of landing when they came within 100 meters of each other.

After 2:30 p.m., Republic Airlines Flight 4464 executed a “go-around,” straying from its intended path, as noted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

As it descended, this jet veered into the flight path of Jazz Aviation Flight 554, passing alarmingly close—less than the length of a football field—around the same time.

Reportedly, a Republic plane, while flying over Long Beach, dropped about 600 feet in mere seconds.

Meanwhile, the Jazz plane ascended to nearly 1,000 feet, also tracked by FlightRadar24.

The FAA stated that both flight crews reacted correctly to in-flight warnings, successfully avoiding what could have been a significant incident.

The airline operating Flight 4464, Republic Airlines, confirmed that the crew received a “resolution recommendation” from the aircraft’s traffic collision avoidance system—this is a high-priority warning advising pilots to modify their altitude to steer clear of potential collisions.

Jazz Aviation confirmed its crew also received traffic alerts, along with direct instructions from air traffic control.

Ultimately, both aircraft landed safely shortly before 3 p.m., and the FAA has launched an investigation into the incident.
