Incident Outside Manchester Synagogue

On Thursday, a man drove his car into a group of people gathered outside a synagogue in Manchester, England, before heading to a nearby banquet. Initially, there were reports of multiple victims, but Greater Manchester Police have since provided updated information that complicates the situation further.

Investigators revealed that Jihad Al Shami, the suspected attacker, didn’t inflict all the injuries reported during the incident.

In a statement released shortly after the attack, police indicated that they responded forcefully to the situation, stating, “This injury may have sadly been maintained as a tragic and unexpected result of the urgently necessary actions my officers took to end this vicious attack.”

Police communication timing at 10:35 AM local time—just under an hour after the attack—confirmed that a Manchester firearms officer had shot and killed one man at 9:38 AM, who is believed to have been involved in the criminal acts.

Further reports indicated that four individuals sustained injuries, attributed to both vehicle collisions and stab wounds. Alongside this, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham remarked on social media that “We will blame the people responsible and do everything in our power to keep people safe.”

Another official announcement around noon confirmed two fatalities linked to the attack. Although there were early suggestions that the perpetrator might be among the dead, police did not officially confirm this due to safety concerns regarding “suspected items” on his person.

Further discrepancies arose regarding the number of individuals injured in the attack, with some reports indicating that only three had serious injuries, while others maintained the figure at four. It’s not entirely clear why these differences occurred, especially when subsequent updates reverted to four injured individuals.

A report released at 3:56 PM stated that four individuals were still hospitalized with significant injuries. Authorities also confirmed that two additional suspects were arrested during the ordeal.

There was a note about the bravery of those inside the synagogue, who helped fortify the entrance, preventing further access by the attacker.

By 9:05 PM, following investigations, police had arrested three suspects, including two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s, and identified Jihad Al Shami as the attacker.

One of the injured reportedly suffered a gunshot wound, though it was noted that it was not life-threatening. Two victims lost their lives, while three others remained in serious condition. These causalities were clarified further, revealing complexities in the injuries sustained during the events of that morning.

A few updates hinted at the possibility that an officer’s response may have inadvertently contributed to one of the deaths and a serious injury. Officials clarified that the only weapon discharged during the incident came from police, who were trying to thwart the attack and protect the Jewish community.

The deceased victims have been identified by social media updates from police as Adrian Dowlby and Melvin Kravitz.
