Shooting at Brown University Leaves Two Dead, Others Injured
A shooting incident at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals and left another injured, according to reports.
University officials reported receiving an alert about a gunman near the Barth and Hawley School of Engineering shortly after 4:30 p.m. Authorities are actively searching for the suspect, who is described as a man wearing black clothing.
“It is critical for everyone in the community to stay sheltered in place,” university representatives stated during the ongoing situation.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley mentioned that the doors to the engineering building were not secured due to final exams taking place at the time, suggesting that anyone could have entered the building. He stated, “what we’ve heard from Brown University officials is that anyone could have accessed the building at the time.”
As per reports, two victims were found deceased at the scene, while another eight individuals were transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. Among them, six are reported to be in critical but stable condition, one is critical, and one is stable. Additionally, a newly identified ninth casualty suffered non-life-threatening injuries from debris linked to the shooting.
Details about the victims, including whether any were students of Brown, have not been disclosed, as noted by Mayor Smiley.
The university reiterated that the campus remains on lockdown, emphasizing the need for community members to continue sheltering in place. Providence Police Deputy Chief Timothy O’Hara indicated that authorities believe there is one shooter involved, but no weapon has been recovered, and the specifics of the firearm used remain unclear.
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee has been in communication with FBI Director Kash Patel, mentioning that local, state, and federal entities are collaborating to ensure public safety and apprehend the shooter. “Our main priority is to keep everyone safe and locate the shooter,” McKee remarked.
