Shooting at Latter-day Saints Funeral in Salt Lake City
At least two individuals lost their lives and six others sustained injuries during a shooting on Wednesday night at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, according to police reports.
The incident occurred as mourners gathered in the church parking lot. Alongside the two fatalities, six others were hurt, all of whom were adults. The deceased have been identified as Sione Vatuvei, 38, and Vaea Tulikihihifo, 46.
Among the injured, three individuals remain in critical condition, having been taken to a nearby hospital in a private vehicle before law enforcement arrived.
As of now, no arrests have been made and the shooter or shooters are still at large. Authorities are currently searching for a gray passenger vehicle that was seen leaving the area.
“The suspects are still outstanding, but our officers have obtained solid leads and are working to locate those involved,” the Salt Lake City Police Department shared on X on Wednesday night.
Redwood Road, where the shooting happened, has been closed in both directions, and police are encouraging anyone with information to contact them at (801) 799-3000.
Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd stated, “We don’t believe this was a targeted attack against a religion or anything like that.”
Reports suggest that an argument broke out in the parking lot during the funeral service, which then escalated into gunfire.
The FBI has acknowledged the incident and is offering support to local authorities. Similarly, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives stated that its agents are assisting with the investigation.
On Twitter, Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) expressed his condolences, urging prayers for the victims and their families, while also encouraging anyone with information about the incident to reach out to law enforcement.
The church released a statement indicating their collaboration with police and expressing concern over violence occurring in a place meant for worship. They also extend their prayers to those affected by this tragic event.
