Firefighters Shot While Responding to Wildfire in Idaho
Several firefighters were shot on Sunday as they responded to a wildfire near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, according to the state’s governor.
Idaho’s Republican Governor Brad Little addressed the incident in a statement on X, stating that two individuals, who are believed to be firefighters, have died, as reported by the Idaho Statesman.
“Multiple heroic firefighters were attacked today while responding to a fire in North Idaho. This is a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters,” Little wrote. He urged Idahoans to keep the injured and their families in their thoughts as details continue to emerge. “Teresa and I are heartbroken. As this situation is still developing, please stay clear from the area to allow law enforcement and firefighters to do their jobs,” he added.
The FBI’s Deputy Director Dan Bongino mentioned that FBI resources were heading to the scene to offer “tactical and operational support.” He confirmed that it remains an active situation.
Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris held a press conference indicating that law enforcement was still under fire. “It is going to be a tough next couple of hours, absolutely,” he expressed. He added, “I’m hoping that somebody has a clear shot, and is able to neutralize. Because they are not, at this point in time, showing any evidence of wanting to surrender. So as soon as somebody has a clear shot, I encourage them to take that shot, neutralize the threat.”
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem is also keeping an eye on the situation, as confirmed by her spokesperson. “@Sec_Noem is actively monitoring the situation in Coeur d’Alene,” said Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin. “Pray for Idaho’s first responders.”
This is an ongoing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
