Armed Highway Robbery Attempt in Lecce, Italy

Authorities in Lecce, Italy, have detained two individuals linked to a dramatic armed robbery attempt that took place on Monday.

Motorists on the highway connecting Lecce and Brindisi in Puglia witnessed a terrifying sight when a group of six to ten armed men, masked and ready for action, tried to rob a security van transporting cash to a local bank.

According to reports, these individuals, clad in black and white jumpsuits with their faces hidden by balaclavas, used a blue Alfa Romeo equipped with flashing lights to impersonate security officers. They then ambushed the van, trying to blast open the door with explosives.

Gunmen wielding Kalashnikov rifles strategically placed vehicles across the roadway and set them ablaze, which forced the security van to halt before launching their attack.

However, the heist was thwarted when the van’s alarm system activated, prompting a violent exchange of gunfire between the robbers and the Carabinieri. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Videos of the chaotic event emerged, filmed by a passerby who happened to be on the highway during the attempted robbery.

After they abandoned their plan, the suspects fled the scene. Police later discovered an abandoned Alfa Romeo in a rural area near Squinzano, Lecce. They continued their search and apprehended one hooded man who was trying to escape. Shortly after, another suspect was caught as well.

The arrested individuals have been identified as 38-year-old former military paratrooper Giuseppe Iannelli and 62-year-old Giuseppe Russo. They are facing charges that include attempted murder, aggravated robbery, possession of military and civilian weapons, explosives, and resisting arrest.

Italian Defense Minister Guido Crocet commented on the incident, mentioning the significant risks faced by law enforcement in protecting the public. He praised the Carabinieri for their swift actions during the attack on the armored vehicle.

This incident highlights the volatility of such criminal endeavors, but thankfully, the response was effective. The community was safe, and the professionalism of law enforcement was underscored by the absence of casualties among civilians and officers.
