Tragic Collision at LaGuardia Airport
A serious accident occurred at LaGuardia Airport late Sunday night, resulting in the deaths of two pilots and at least 41 others requiring medical attention.
The incident happened as an Air Canada Express flight was landing when it collided with a Port Authority fire truck that was responding to an unrelated emergency involving a United Airlines aircraft reporting a strange odor in the cabin. This unfortunate event led to the immediate shutdown of one of the busiest airports in the United States.
At around 11:40 p.m. ET, Air Canada Express Flight 8646, a Bombardier CRJ-900 operated by Jazz Aviation, had just touched down after arriving from Montreal.
The fire truck, part of the Port Authority’s Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF), was crossing the runway at the same time. Reports suggest the plane was flying at approximately 160 miles per hour when the collision occurred, which was nearly head-on. The impact was severe enough to detach the nose and cockpit of the aircraft.
- The force flipped the fire truck and caused the plane to slide off the runway into an awkward position.
Tragically, both the pilot and co-pilot of the Air Canada flight, who were Canadian citizens, did not survive. Emergency crews transported 41 people to local hospitals for treatment.
One flight attendant suffered serious injuries after being thrown from their seat while strapped in, while two police officers in the fire truck sustained injuries, including broken bones, but are in stable condition.
As of Monday morning, the Port Authority’s Executive Director reported that 32 individuals had been treated and released, but nine remained hospitalized, including one passenger with a brain hemorrhage.
Audio from air traffic control recorded disturbing moments prior to the crash, indicating serious communication failures. Voices were heard urgently instructing a truck to stop as the plane was landing.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated an investigation and has sent a team to oversee the inquiry, which will include examining a recovered black box. Authorities are also exploring whether recent staffing issues played a role in the incident.
As a result of the crash, LaGuardia Airport has been closed to all flights, with a ground stop in effect until at least 2 p.m. ET on Monday, although there are indications this may be extended.
“The loss of our fellow pilots is a profound tragedy. They dedicated their lives to ensuring the safety of passengers, and our thoughts are with their families,” stated the president of the Airline Pilots Association.
This heartbreaking event has left many mourning, and officials continue to provide updates as the investigation unfolds.
