Tragic Deaths of Two Students at Franciscan University
On Monday afternoon, two students were discovered deceased in a vehicle at Franciscan University in Steubenville. The time was just after 12:30 p.m., according to a statement from both the university president, Father Dave Pivonka, and Steubenville Police Chief Kenneth Anderson.
The students, identified as Luke Reimer, 20, from Indian Shores, Florida, and Mary Mitch, 20, from Downingtown, Pennsylvania, were found in the back lot of St. Agnes Residence Hall.
“This news brings deep sadness to the entire Franciscan University community. We are saddened by the loss of two young lives. Our hearts ache for their families, friends, classmates, professors, and everyone who knew and loved them,” Pivonka stated. “We stand with those who mourn, asking for comfort and peace during this time.”
Police Chief Anderson reported that officers were sent to the scene to check on the welfare of the individuals inside the vehicle and confirmed that both were pronounced dead at the location. “There was no sign of foul play or drug use,” he added.
On Tuesday, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed that toxicology tests indicated both students died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Anderson noted that the incident appeared to be accidental, likely caused by an issue related to the vehicle’s exhaust.
“While this information may provide some clarity, it doesn’t lessen the profound sadness we feel over the loss of these two beloved members of our Franciscan family,” the university expressed.
Following this tragic incident, the university decided to cancel events on Monday and recommended that students seek support from counselors and chaplains available on campus.
A gathering titled “Holy Hour and Rosary” took place that evening to offer the community a chance to come together in remembrance.
Pivonka encouraged everyone to unite in faith and support during this difficult time, invoking the memory of Christ’s compassion for those who suffer loss. “May we all find strength and peace in these moments of sorrow,” he remarked.
