Two female students at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville were found dead in what appears to be a tragic case of murder and suicide in their dormitory.
A university spokesperson confirmed that Kelsie Martin, 22, and Hallie Helms were discovered with gunshot injuries at Wilgus Hall.
Hallie Helms, who was studying elementary education, was pronounced dead at the scene. Kelsie Martin, an assistant resident director majoring in psychology, was initially taken to Southwest Health and later transferred to UW Hospital, where she unfortunately passed away.
A preliminary autopsy indicated that Martin died due to a gunshot wound, while Helms’ death was attributed to a self-inflicted gunshot. According to the school, “All indications at this time from the preliminary autopsy suggest a murderous suicide.”

University police responded to the situation following a request for “obstruction.” After the incident, photographs captured a student being escorted from the dorm during the investigation.
The university reported that no one else is believed to have been involved in this incident.
Final exams for the remainder of the week have been canceled, and counseling services are being offered. Students can access free emotional support at (844)602-6680 or (720)272-0004.
Helms, who graduated with honors in primary education, had recently transferred to UW-Platteville in the spring of 2023. Martin, a native of Beloit, Wisconsin, had just graduated on May 17 with a degree in psychology and had been the assistant resident director for three years, as highlighted by the University Resident Life Office.
The university shared via Facebook, thanking the community for its support: “We are overwhelmed by your kindness… We are a close community, and this outpouring of care is a powerful reminder of who we are. We don’t take it for granted. #pioneerstrong.”
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers expressed his condolences and urged the community to keep the students and staff of UW-Platteville in their thoughts.
Officials from the UW-Platteville Police Department have not provided further comments regarding the incident.
