Two top advisers of Defense Secretary Pete Hegses took administrative leave Tuesday after being escorted from the Pentagon and investigated as leakers, according to two officials.
Officials were Dan Caldwell, Heggs’ top advisor, and Darryn Sernick, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Pentagon.
It is not clear what their motives are, but one official said Caldwell was leaking information to “the reporter on the left to hurt the secretary.”
And while it’s not yet clear what the unauthorized disclosure is, the Pentagon has been plagued by a series of leaks over the past few weeks, urging the chief of Pentagon staff to order Joe Casper to investigate.
Kasper’s order came later New York Times Elon Musk reported that he had planned to visit the Pentagon to explain the Department of Defense’s “war plan.” In the Pentagon’s secure meeting room, the Department of Defense and military leaders gather to discuss the most pressing issues of the department.
While Musk visited the Pentagon, the meeting took place in Hegses’ offices rather than in the tanks, and China was not discussed.
But even before that, there was a leak of classification information known only at the highest level in the Pentagon.
Caldwell was one of Hegzes’ most trusted advisors. Signal Group Chat National Security Advisor Mike Waltz was established to discuss the strike against Hoosys, and Hegses gave Caldwell’s name as a contact for coordination.
Caldwell was an American veteran, working with Hegses, first as policy director and then as executive director.
Cernick also worked as a senior adviser to concern veterans after Hegses left the organization.
Caldwell was recently at a defense priority, an organization known for advocating for foreign policy binding.
In recent weeks, President Donald Trump has stepped up his rhetoric against Iran over a nuclear program, with the Pentagon sending a second aircraft in the Middle East and deploying at least six B-2 stealth bombers on Diego Garcia, an island in the Indian Ocean.
