A 12-pound puppy became a hero to two families when a fire broke out in their Long Beach, New York home during the night on November 9, 2025. A mini goldendoodle named Chase alerted everyone just before the smoke alarms sounded.
Persistent Barking
Chase, a two-year-old pup, started barking incessantly upon sensing smoke. His loud barking managed to wake three people from both households, giving them crucial moments to escape.
“Residents were startled by the sound of barking and when they looked outside, they saw flames,” remarked Rick DiGiacomo from the Long Beach Fire Department.
Fortunately, everyone made it out safely, although one individual had to escape via the roof. If not for Chase’s alertness, that might have ended differently.
Deputy Chief Hadrick Ray was also involved in saving a couple in their 80s living nearby.
“I noticed someone with a walker, so we pulled him out first, and then the police helped the other person still inside,” Ray explained.
Chase’s Bravery
Initially, family members suspected there might be an intruder due to Chase’s barks.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by various fire and police authorities, including the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office.
Importance of Smoke Detectors
DiGiacomo emphasizes the importance of functioning smoke detectors and the role pets can play in saving lives.
“Ensure smoke detectors work properly, and if you have pets, they can be lifesavers too,” he stated.
Chase may be small in size, but his impact was significant, showing that sometimes, even a tiny hero can make a big difference.
