Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed naming former deputy prime minister Andrei Belosov, a civilian and economics expert, as the new defense minister more than two years after the start of the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin said on Sunday. It was announced on .
According to the Kremlin, President Putin has appointed Sergei Shoigu, a longtime ally of Putin who has served as defense minister since 2012, to replace incumbent Nikolai Patrushev as secretary of the Russian Security Council and to serve as secretary of the Russian Security Council. He also wants the industrial complex to be held accountable.
The Kremlin said Valery Gerasimov, Russia’s chief of staff, will remain in his post, as will the country’s veteran foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov.
