Ty Cobb: Founding Fathers would be 'weeping and stunned' over Trump guilty verdict

Former President Donald Trump White House counsel Ty Cobb said America’s founding fathers would be “in tears and stunned” by former President Donald Trump’s guilty verdict in a hush-money case handed down on Thursday.

Cobb said it would be “sad for the country” if a former president were convicted.

“It’s a tragedy that we have a former president who has been convicted and a front-runner to be the next president who has been convicted,” Cobb said Thursday during an appearance on CNN’s “Erin Burnett Outfront.”

“If our founding fathers were here today, we would all be in tears, we would all be astonished,” he said, “and I, frankly, am saddened by this because it means so much to America and it’s a disgrace to America.”

Trump was found guilty of all 34 felony counts on Thursday, making him the first former commander in chief to be convicted of a felony. A New York jury found Trump guilty on Thursday of falsifying business records to hide an alleged affair during the 2016 presidential campaign. The conviction does not bar Trump from running for the White House. The sentence is scheduled to be handed down on July 11, just four days before the Republican National Convention (RNC) where Trump is scheduled to be formally nominated.

Cobb said he doesn’t think Trump will go to prison, but added that “it’s certainly a possibility.”

“If he receives a prison sentence, he likely won’t serve it until after the appeal is completed, which could be a year to 18 months or longer,” Cobb said Thursday.

Cobb said Tuesday, before the verdict was announced, that he believes there is a good chance Trump will be found guilty in the New York case.
