Former White House Counsel Ty Cobb criticized Judge Eileen Cannon for indefinitely delaying former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago documents lawsuit.
“But all she really did today was make public what everyone already knew, including Jack Smith: that she had no intention of taking this case to trial. ” Cobb told CNN’s Erin Burnett on Tuesday.
Cannon’s Tuesday order, issued two weeks before Trump’s trial is scheduled to begin on May 20, postpones some court dates in the case to late July and sets new trial start dates. Not set.
He said the delay was necessary to resolve a number of issues, particularly those detailed in the Confidential Information Procedures Act (CIPA), such as how classified information is handled in court.
Cannon said there were still “eight substantive pretrial motions” to be decided, but Cobb said it took months to sort out the various pretrial motions. He claimed that there was.
“So I think this was always her goal, frankly, to prevent it from going to trial,” Cobb said. Highlighted by Mediaite. “But I think it also revealed her… incompetence, utter incompetence.”
Cobb argued that his decision to start the trial by Cannon, a Trump appointee, was a “combination of bias and incompetence.” He called her decisions, including scheduling hearings for the Justice Department’s trial team, “truly baffling” and “tragic.”
“She didn’t respect the public’s interests for a single day in this case. She sat in her office paralyzed by judgments on allegations that were clearly easily resolved. And sadly… , the case was never brought to trial, despite the fact that it was one of the “most important cases in history and could easily have been tried before the election.” he said.
