Ty Cobb Critiques Trump’s Influence on Kimmel’s Suspension
Ty Cobb, who was once a lawyer for President Trump during his first term, has voiced strong disapproval regarding the administration’s interference in the recent suspension of Jimmy Kimmel from ABC.
Cobb remarked that the pressure exerted by the Trump administration and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) resembled actions taken in oppressive regimes like those in Russia and Nazi Germany, where comedians faced censorship.
He drew parallels to historical events, mentioning that in 1939, under Hitler’s regime, Joseph Goebbels had banned several comedians from German airwaves, aiming to shield government interests from criticism.
Goebbels, who served as Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda, famously declared that the careers of these entertainers would be over, effectively erasing cabaret from German culture. This seems to be the incident Cobb referenced.
In a discussion with Welker, Cobb expressed his frustration over the threats to media freedom, suggesting he would target a TV station for censorship following observations of Russian President Vladimir Putin silencing dissent within the arts.
“Trump is waging a war against those who offend him. It’s all about revenge. Sadly, his allies align with FCC’s Brendan Kerr, a writer for 2025,” Cobb noted, reflecting on his ongoing criticism of the president.
Cobb served on Trump’s legal team during the Robert Mueller investigation but resigned in spring 2018.
The suspension of Kimmel came amid conservative backlash rooted in comments he made regarding a suspect involved in an attempt on conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s life. Kimmel labeled the suspect a “Maga,” although reports indicated a left-wing political alignment.
This incident has sparked renewed discussions concerning the limits of free speech.
Cobb’s remarks were initially highlighted by various media outlets.
The future of Kimmel’s role at ABC remains uncertain.
