Kansas City Chiefs’ Tyquan Thornton Suffers Severe Ankle Injury
During a game on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton experienced a very severe ankle injury.
What’s remarkable is that it took him a few moments to even realize what had happened.
With only 3:25 left on the clock and the Chiefs trailing 19-17, quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a deep pass down the left sideline. Thornton made a stunning 55-yard catch, but when Raiders safety Treydan Stukes tackled him, he landed awkwardly on Thornton’s left ankle.
Initially, after making that impressive catch, Thornton seemed ready to celebrate. But then, as he attempted to get up, he looked down and saw his left foot pointing in an alarming direction.
It’s hard to watch such moments without feeling a bit queasy.
Adrenaline plays a strange role in these situations, evidently.
Commentators Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt were visibly horrified when they saw the replay. “Oh, no,” Watt reacted, while Nantz added, “Oh my goodness. I don’t even want to look at it.” Their responses seemed quite appropriate given the circumstances.
Medical staff quickly attended to Thornton, placing his left leg in an air cast before escorting him off the field. The Chiefs confirmed he was out with an ankle injury, but as of now, a specific diagnosis hasn’t been provided.
This injury feels particularly unlucky for Thornton, who was just starting to establish himself with the Chiefs. A second-round pick by the Patriots in 2022, he had joined the Chiefs’ practice squad in November 2024, made the active roster in 2025, and signed again in March after a promising season where he caught 19 passes for 438 yards and three touchdowns.
Before this game, he had accumulated 108 receiving yards over the prior two matches and even had his first career 100-yard game, finishing with five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns.
The Chiefs were already short-handed as Rashee Rice left the game in the first quarter due to a right hamstring injury. Rice had recorded 190 receiving yards in the first three games, making Thornton’s potential absence even more impactful on Kansas City’s offense.
Thornton’s catch helped set up Kenneth Walker’s touchdown that gave Kansas City the lead, enabling them to clinch a 30-27 victory and improve to 4-0.
Let’s hope that Thornton’s injury turns out to be less severe than it appears because, really, it looked quite serious.
