Tyreek Hill Contemplates Retirement Following Injury
Tyreek Hill, the star receiver for the Dolphins, is facing the reality of mortality as a football player after a significant season-ending injury.
While he hasn’t made a final decision about retirement, Hill recognizes it’s a possibility after suffering a torn left ACL and other ligament damage on September 29th.
“I think that decision will depend on my feelings and mindset at the time,” Hill mentioned during an appearance on the podcast “The Set.” “Currently, I’m happy—happy with my children and satisfied with my career. I truly love playing football. But it demands a lot of time. Staying at the top and contributing to the team’s success takes significant mental and physical effort.”
“Right now, I’m in a phase where I need to discuss things with my family, especially my mom. The decision will come from where my heart is at that moment. However, I really want to focus on spending time with my family, as I feel like I haven’t had enough of those moments lately… I definitely want to avoid making any hasty decisions.”
As Hill prepares for next season at 32 years old, he may find himself a free agent, with rumors suggesting the Dolphins are likely to release him.
He inked a three-year contract worth $90 million, with $65 million guaranteed, which extends through the 2026 season.
This season marks Hill’s 10th in the NFL, following six years with the Chiefs and a strong performance that took him to the final four with the Dolphins.
There’s always a chance Hill could return and continue to be a top receiver, but major surgery can spell trouble for a speed-focused wideout, especially over the age of 30.
The injury occurred in Week 4 when he was tackled during a pass along the sideline, resulting in a severe bend in his knee that led to him being carted off the field.
Shockingly, Hill was seen smiling as he left the field, a reaction he explained was about focusing on the positives. “When I got tackled, I tried to stand up but saw my legs buckle,” he recounted on the podcast. “I started laughing because I realized I’ve been gifted with the talent to play this game for so long. The love and support from my family are incredible, so I wasn’t dwelling on the injury; I was thinking about all the great times I’ve had playing.”
With the Dolphins at a disappointing 1-6 this season, changes seem imminent. Speculations suggest potential coaching shifts and quarterback changes, which likely won’t include Hill. As he recovers, Hill intends to take his time in deciding if he can still compete at a high level after a decade in the NFL.
