The Miami-Dade Police detained Tyreek Hill ahead of Sunday's Week 1 opener, sending shockwaves through the Dolphins organization.
Hill was pulled from his car and handcuffed on Sunday after he was accused of driving an estimated 60 mph in a 40 mph speed zone, but he eventually left the scene and was allowed to play in the team's game against the Jaguars at Hard Rock Stadium.
Hill, 30, ended up being charged with careless driving and a seat belt violation.
After body camera footage of the detention chaos — teammate Callais Campbell was also handcuffed after trying to calm the situation — and its aftermath was released on Monday, players and coaches, including star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, spoke out.
“Hearing Tyreek's voice on the tape, it kind of got me emotional,” Tagovailoa told reporters on Tuesday.
Head coach Mike McDaniel, According to the Associated Presssaid this week that the detention was particularly “provocative”, particularly given Campbell's involvement.
“If I'm Kaleigh Campbell and I'm 38 years old and you go to work, no matter what personal naivety you may have had, you're a giant, strong, miraculous guy who has done the right thing in every way, shape and form. There's a very inspirational element to that,” McDaniel said.
Defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver told The Associated Press that the detention was almost personal for him.
“It's a shame in this day and age,” Weaver said, “I have two sons, and my wife is Mexican-American. They were both born light-skinned, so I even felt a sense of relief that they would be able to avoid some of the same issues that I've had to deal with throughout my life.”
In two posts on X on Monday, defensive back Jalen Ramsey slammed MDPD for its handling of the situation.
“Fire them now! These bastards shouldn't have any power, get out!” he wrote.
“I watch the body camera footage over and over again and it's crazy! Every time I watch it I find new nonsense.” Ramsay added in another post..
Offensive tackle Terron Armstead also took issue. He described the way police handled the situation as “unnecessary.”
“Tyreek came into the locker room right after this!” Armstead wrote on Monday. “His eyes were red with rage and pain! All I could do was feel my brother's pain while he told me what happened!! Watching this f**king scene makes it even worse! Totally unnecessary and totally sad!”
MDPD told CBS News Miami on Tuesday that Officer Danny Torres was placed on administrative duties this week after being taken into custody.
“The internal investigation is still ongoing and we will provide further information as it becomes available, pending the outcome of the investigation,” the statement said.
Attorney Ignacio Alvarez said: Torres told ESPN. He said he hoped all involved would not make any further statements about the incident.
“We urge all parties to refrain from making public statements that misrepresent our client's actions and mislead the public about Mr. Hill's detention,” Alvarez said in a statement.
Still, Hill's attorney, Drew Rosenhaus, said Tuesday that the detaining officers should be fired.
