Investigators have determined that a child playing with a lighter was the primary cause of the fire that destroyed Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill's Florida mansion. According to CBS News Miami.
“The investigation indicates that the fire was accidental and caused by a child playing with a lighter in the bedroom where the fire started,” Davie Fire Rescue Fire Marshal Robert Taylor said, according to CBS News Miami. It has become clear,” he said. “Fortunately, all residents of this home were able to evacuate safely and there were no injuries.”
According to WSVN 7 News, firefighters were called to the Southwest Ranch home that Hill bought in 2022 for $6.9 million just before 2 p.m. ET Wednesday.
It was classified as a double alarm fire.
It took firefighters about 45 minutes to extinguish the fire, leaving “a gaping hole in the roof” and “significant smoke and water damage inside,” according to CBS.
Hill, 29, was practicing with the Dolphins at the time of the fire, and the wide receiver left the practice facility to attend to the situation.
Hill's attorney, Drew Rosenhaus, said several family members were present at the time of the fire. He added that it was mostly confined to one room.
“He and his family are safe,” Rosenhaus said. “We are so thankful that no one was hurt and no pets were involved. We are very grateful to the firefighters who put out the fire. Fortunately, the fire was limited to a small area of the house. Naturally, there will be smoke and water damage.
“It's very difficult for anyone to have a fire in your home, but Tyreke and his family handled it with as much calm as you could hope for.”
Hill showed up with a brace on his left leg, according to CBS, but Rosenhaus said Hill is scheduled to play Sunday when the Dolphins play the Bills in the AFC East.
If Miami wins, they will become the No. 2 seed in the AFC, but if they lose, the Dolphins will drop to the No. 6 seed and will face the Chiefs in Kansas City.
Hill, who earned his eighth Pro Bowl berth in eight seasons on Wednesday, has an NFL-leading 1,717 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns this season.
