Tyreek Hill and the Chargers: A Potential Match

INDIANAPOLIS — There’s a strong connection between wide receiver Tyreek Hill and the Chargers that can’t be overlooked.

For one, the Chargers could really use the explosive speed that Hill offers. He has the capability to turn a game around by himself when he’s healthy.

Additionally, they recently brought in former head coach Mike McDaniel as their offensive coordinator. Hill and McDaniel had impressive stints together in Miami, where they achieved career highs with 119 receptions and over 1,700 receiving yards for two consecutive seasons.

It seems that, besides Andy Reid, McDaniel likely knows Hill better than anyone else.

What’s perhaps most crucial? Hill is currently available.

Just to recap, the Dolphins released Hill a couple of weeks ago as part of a salary shake-up. This means he won’t need to wait for the new league year to find a new team.

Sure, he’s recovering from a serious knee injury he suffered against the Jets in late September of last year, which raises questions about his start for next season. Still, it would be wise for the Chargers to bring him in soon. A one-year deal would allow them to monitor his recovery while prepping him to hit the ground running once he’s medically cleared.

Imagine a healthy Hill teaming up with Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, wide receiver Rad McConkie, and young tight end Orondo Gadsden.

In an offense run by McDaniel, known for his innovative strategies in football?

It just makes sense.

Maybe that’s why there was a hint of a smile on Chargers general manager Joe Hortis’ face when he was asked about the possibility of signing Hill during the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday.

However, Hortis kept things vague, stating, “I’m not going to tip off any players right now.”

He wasn’t inclined to reveal the team’s strategies this early in the offseason, especially regarding how to bolster the support around Herbert. Essentially, he likely kept his cards close to his chest, including the prospect of bringing Hill onto the roster.

He gave a similar non-answer regarding Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum, another valuable player potentially in play. Remember, Hortis was part of the Ravens’ front office when they selected Linderbaum in 2022.

When asked about him, Hortis simply said, “I’m not going to talk about players who are under contract with other teams.” “That’s not my intention.”

Did anyone think he’d lay out the entire plan?

Like Linderbaum, Hill seems like a great fit for the Chargers. They’re expected to engage with both players, and discussions will likely unfold in Indianapolis this week as teams, agents, and players gear up for free agency, kicking off on March 11th.

Or, for Hill, perhaps even sooner.
