U.S. Airman Passes Away During Pregame Event at UTSA vs. Naval Academy Game in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas

A U.S. Air Force Tactical Air Controller tragically died after plummeting from the rafters of the Alamodome during a pregame ceremony before the football game between the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and the U.S. Naval Academy. The incident occurred in front of a large crowd that had gathered to witness the ceremony on Saturday evening.

The airman was part of a four-member team that had been scheduled to rappel from the stadium’s ceiling as part of the opening festivities. This event was part of UTSA’s “Salute to Armed Forces & Veterans Game.” According to an online defense news outlet, a spokesperson for Nellis Air Force Base confirmed the airman’s death and noted that an investigation is underway concerning the incident.

Each of the four team members, stationed at Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis, were descending from over 150 feet above the playing field. As fans gasped in surprise, medical personnel rushed to assist the injured airman, who was later taken to a nearby hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries.

Despite the shocking event, the football game between the Navy Midshipmen and the UTSA Roadrunners proceeded. The American Conference, an NCAA collegiate athletic conference, released a statement on social media expressing its sorrow regarding the pregame incident. They extended their thoughts to the airman, his family, colleagues, and all those affected.

The deceased airman was affiliated with the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, which is responsible for training Tactical Air Controllers who coordinate airstrikes from ground-level positions during conflicts. This unit is primarily located at Nellis Air Force Base, with the detachment involved in the ceremony based at Camp Bullis.

In response to the tragedy, UTSA released a statement offering support to students who were present at the game and witnessed the incident. Their message included crisis hotline numbers and was shared on multiple social media platforms such as Instagram. It expressed deep sadness over what occurred during the game’s opening, extending thoughts and prayers to the affected soldier, his family, and military colleagues. They recognized that the incident might have emotionally impacted members of their community and activated wellbeing services to assist faculty, staff, and students.

The identity of the airman has not been disclosed at this time.
