U.S. and NATO leaders consider security assurances for Ukraine as White House plans meeting between Zelensky and Putin

Trump Hosts Zelensky as Ukraine Seeks Security Guarantees

U.S. and NATO military officials are evaluating potential security guarantees for Ukraine following a meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This meeting aimed to outline steps towards ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine with Russia.

Before Zelensky’s arrival on Monday, Trump met with several European leaders, including NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and others. They discussed various issues, including the looming question of post-conflict security for Ukraine.

Despite the pressure from leaders about the possibility of sending U.S. troops, Trump made it clear that he wouldn’t support troop deployment in Ukraine as part of the peace negotiations. However, he did express a willingness to provide U.S. air support, as he mentioned in a talk on the “Fox & Friends” show.

“When it comes to security, they’re [Europe] willing to put people on the ground,” Trump remarked. “We’re [U.S.] willing to help them with things, especially … by air, because nobody has the kind of stuff we have.”

Another option mentioned was the potential involvement of European forces in Ukraine, operating under U.S. command, but serving under their nations’ flags rather than NATO’s banner.

Approximately 30 nations have joined the so-called “Coalition of the Willing” to support Ukraine. Initially, they contemplated deploying about 30,000 troops but shifted focus to establishing a “security umbrella” that would involve air, sea, and training resources from allied nations.

Zelensky emphasized the need for security guarantees that would fortify Ukraine’s military, a sentiment echoed by President Macron, who advocated for “no limitations in numbers, capabilities, weapons.” This endeavor to create protections against future Russian threats is anticipated to progress in the upcoming weeks.

On Tuesday, Zelensky mentioned, “We are already working on the concrete content of the security guarantees.”

NATO military leaders are scheduled for a virtual meeting to formulate strategies moving forward. They will hear a briefing regarding last week’s summit involving Trump and Putin from U.S. Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, who oversees NATO operations in Europe.

Trump indicated that he had spoken with President Putin after his meetings with foreign leaders and revealed that efforts are underway to finalize details for a potential summit between Putin and Zelensky, eventually including Trump in a trilateral meeting.

“At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Putin and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy. After that meeting takes place, we will have a trilat, which would be the two presidents, plus myself,” Trump stated.

He characterized this as a “very good early step for a war that has been going on for almost four years.”

On Wednesday, the Kremlin showed a willingness to engage in discussions about settling the conflict with Ukraine, including security guarantees pledged by the U.S. and the UK. However, they insisted that talks excluding Russia would lead to “a road to nowhere.”

Despite continued military actions on Ukraine, including recent airstrikes that resulted in civilian casualties, officials within the Trump administration are confident in his capacity to facilitate a resolution to the protracted conflict.

“The only leader in the world that can talk to both [Putin and Zelensky] and bring them to a meeting is Donald J. Trump, the President of the United States. He’s the only one,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “We should be proud that we have a president that’s made peace a priority.”
