U.S. captures a record 300,000 kilograms of chemicals used for meth production tied to the Sinaloa Cartel

Major Drug Operation Results in Large Seizure of Chemicals

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has seized more than 300,000 kilograms of chemicals used for producing methamphetamine in Houston, Texas.

On Wednesday, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, along with Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Todd Lyons, announced the successful detention of substances destined for labs managed by the Sinaloa Drug Cartel in Mexico.

“This is the largest seizure of precursor chemicals used to manufacture methamphetamine in U.S. history,” Pirro said on social media. “China was sending over 700,000 pounds on the high seas to the Sinaloa Cartel before my office seized them. Thanks to the designation of the Sinaloa Cartel as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by President Trump and Secretary Rubio, we can now act more effectively and decisively.”

The importation and exportation of such chemicals can be legal under certain circumstances, but they remain subject to regulation.

A seizure warrant obtained by Pirro’s office enabled the collection of these chemicals, following the cartel’s FTO designation on January 20th by President Trump.

Pirro shared a video showcasing herself amid approximately 1,300 barrels of the seized chemicals, which reached nearly waist-high next to her, pointing out that transporting all of them would require 24 18-wheelers to a secure location.

“The bottom line is this,” she stated. “Whenever foreign terrorist organizations aim to produce drugs that harm Americans, we will seize them, whether it’s on the high seas or within the country or another nation.”

The attorney’s office provided a statement explaining the ramifications of this seizure.

“These precursor chemicals are directly tied to one of the most dangerous networks, the Sinaloa Cartel, known for its brutality and violence. They are responsible for devastating many communities, both in the U.S. and beyond,” remarked Jud Murdock, Director of Field Operations for Customs and Border Protection in Houston. “This represents one of the largest operations of its kind and underscores the importance of collaboration in combating drug trafficking and terrorism.”

The statement also detailed that these chemicals could have potentially been used to produce around 190,000 kilograms of methamphetamine, valued at approximately $569 million if they had not been intercepted. Agents recovered six shipping containers of benzyl alcohol, weighing 164,880 kilograms, and N-methyl formamide, weighing 151,560 kilograms—both essential for manufacturing pharmaceuticals.

In Fiscal Year 2024, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol reported confiscating a total of 78,925 kilograms of methamphetamine along the southwest border.

This operation involved various agencies, including the FBI, DEA, Department of Defense Joint Interagency Task Force, U.S. Northern Command, and the Texas National Guard.

This initiative aligns with the Attorney General’s directive aimed at eradication of cartels and transnational criminal organizations, empowering federal prosecutors and leveraging resources for substantial impact against these threats to U.S. sovereignty.

This isn’t the first instance of federal authorities publicizing such significant seizures. A previous announcement detailed a successful crackdown in New England, where federal agents seized about 500 pounds of various drugs, including fentanyl and methamphetamine, some of which were associated with the Sinaloa name. The cartel is reportedly marketing counterfeit pills via social media.

“They’re directly targeting young people, trying to trick them into consuming a fake pill,” stated Jarod Forget, special agent in charge of the New England Division. “Payments can be made online through apps, and communication occurs over encrypted platforms.”

Officials also arrested 171 purported Sinaloa cartel members during this operation.

“These are significant arrests, involving high-level members of the Sinaloa cartel,” Forget confirmed.

Pirro concluded by emphasizing the importance of these recent seizures, noting that the efforts extend beyond just Houston: “You never know where we’ll be tomorrow.”
