Tanker Seized Off Venezuela
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that the United States had successfully seized an oil tanker that was en route to Cuba from the coast of Venezuela.
“We just captured a tanker off the coast of Venezuela. A large tanker, a very large tanker. The largest tanker ever captured in combat. There are other things in the works as well; you’ll see that later,” Trump shared with reporters at the White House.
He explained that the seizure occurred for “very good reasons,” though he didn’t elaborate much on those reasons. When questioned about the fate of the oil aboard, he suggested, “Well, I guess we’ll keep it.”
U.S. officials stated the operation was “led by the Coast Guard and assisted by the U.S. Navy.” Another official mentioned that the tanker, identified as Skipper, had been “flying a flag that belied its nationality” during the seizure.
The official elaborated, saying, “The tanker was carrying Venezuelan oil, but it was seized not due to its association with the Maduro regime, but because of its previous connections to illegal Iranian oil smuggling. A federal judge had approved a seizure warrant for it about two weeks ago.”
The UK-based maritime risk company Vanguard confirmed that the Skipper had been sanctioned by the U.S. on Wednesday for its alleged participation in illegal Iranian oil trade under the alias “Adisa.”
An unnamed source noted that the tanker was bound for Cuba, where the state-run company Cubametales intended to sell it to an Asian energy broker. Most of Venezuela’s oil products are typically sold to China due to U.S. sanctions.
While Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro did not specifically address the tanker seizure in a fiery speech on Wednesday, he did claim that the country’s military was “ready to break the teeth of the North American Empire if necessary.”
In related news, international crude oil prices saw a rise. Industry analysts suggested it may take some time for oil buyers to fully understand the implications of the seizure and whether the tanker was indeed loaded with Venezuelan crude, which would affect its availability.
