The US Defense Department has deployed 12 warships to the Persian Gulf and Mediterranean Sea amid rising tensions in the Middle East.

The fleet includes the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt as well as destroyers and other warships.

The deployment follows the assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah military leader Fuad Shoker, both of which have been blamed on Israel’s national intelligence agency, Mossad.

At Haniyeh’s funeral, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei vowed to take revenge on Israel for the killing of the Hamas leader.

Such an escalation of actions is said to undermine the possibility of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza and push the region further towards the risk of genocide and a point of no return.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah warned of a “new phase” in the ongoing conflict at Shokhar’s funeral.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called on “all parties” to de-escalate, saying it risked leading to a much larger conflict.

Israeli spokesman Daniel Hagari said the Israeli military was on “high alert” and “prepared for any situation, particularly an immediate attack.”
