A magnitude 7.4 earthquake reportedly struck the Pacific island of Vanuatu near Australia, severely damaging the US embassy.
“A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Vanuatu's capital Port Vila on Tuesday, damaging buildings and cars and at least one person was reported dead,” it said. Reuters.
“Vanuatu's national broadcaster VBTC aired footage of a vehicle crushed by a collapsed building on a street lined with retail stores. The broadcaster reported that one person was trapped in the collapsed building,” it added.
A video circulating on social media showed “windows broken and concrete pillars toppled in buildings housing the capital's foreign missions, including the US, UK, France and New Zealand embassies.”
“The High Commission building, which is co-located with the United States, France and the United Kingdom, sustained significant damage,” a New Zealand Foreign Ministry spokesperson said in a statement.
Dan McGarry, a Vanuatu-based journalist with the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, reported seeing three people injured.
“I saw three people with serious injuries on stretchers awaiting treatment,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
“There is a lot of damage in many parts of the city. There are buildings that have been turned into pancakes,” he added.
Vanuatu was a colony of Britain and France until it gained independence in 1980 and became an independent republic.
