On Monday, U.S. military officials noted that the recent Joint War Conference held between Russia and Belarus highlighted certain connections to the Trump administration, particularly as Belarus is known to be a close ally of Moscow.
The military exercise, dubbed “Zapad-2025,” kicked off on Friday across training sites in both countries. This comes amid escalating tensions with NATO, sparked by an incident last week where Poland shot down a Russian drone that encroached its airspace.
During the war training event, two U.S. officers in uniform were formally welcomed by Belarusian Defense Minister Victor Klenikov. They conversed in Russian, expressing gratitude for the invitation. According to reports, Klenikov inquired, “We will show you anything that interests you, whatever you want.”
A video was later shared, showing the handshake between the U.S. officers and Belarusian officials, with participation from military representatives of 23 countries, including NATO allies like Turkey and Hungary.
In a somewhat surprising statement, the Belarusian government remarked, “Who would have thought how another morning of Zapad-2025 would begin?”
As for the Pentagon, they have not yet commented on the matter.
This visit by American officers has sparked conversations given Russia’s historical use of Belarus as a launch point for sending troops into Ukraine at the start of its invasion in early February 2022. Additionally, Belarus permits Russia to host tactical nuclear weapons on its territory.
Moreover, this visit follows a trip to Minsk made by White House envoy John Kohl, where he also met President Alexander Lukashenko, suggesting a potential warming of relations with the former Soviet ally during the Trump administration.
Interestingly, Trump had recently suggested breaking through the drone incursion narrative and lifted sanctions against the Belarusian airline, Bellavia. John Kohl mentioned that there are plans to reopen the U.S. embassy in Belarus soon.
Meanwhile, tensions are still palpable between NATO and Russia after the incident where Poland shot down the drone, marking a significant moment as it was the first time a member of the alliance engaged during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
