Fred Carly, who won a bronze medal in the 2024 Olympics, was arrested on Thursday, just days before he was set to compete in a track event. The arrest follows allegations of assault against his ex-girlfriend. According to the police report, officers responded to a hotel in South Florida early in the morning after Olympian Alaysha Johnson accused Carly of attacking her during a meeting related to the tournament’s preparations.
Johnson claimed that Carly had explicitly stated, “I was going to go to everyone here.” The situation escalated to the point where Carly allegedly punched Johnson in the face, which led to her injury. Police noted that the injuries she sustained were consistent with her account of the incident.
Originally scheduled to participate in the Grand Slam Track event, Carly was slated to run the 100-meter dash on Saturday and the 200-meter dash on Sunday. However, the event confirmed that he would not be competing.
Carly is facing first-degree misdemeanor charges following this incident. Interestingly, earlier this year, he faced domestic violence allegations from a separate incident involving a confrontation with law enforcement during an argument with his wife.
An affidavit reveals that on May 6, 2024—Carly’s birthday—he and his wife had a heated exchange, which stemmed from her communication with someone on Instagram. Reports indicate he approached her aggressively, which caused her to react out of fear. This interaction allegedly led to Carly grabbing her and pushing her down, restricting her ability to breathe.
An alert for his potential arrest had previously been triggered in the prison system, culminating in his charges from January. Carly earned a bronze medal during the 100-meter race in Paris, while his teammate, Noah Lyles, took home a gold medal.
In addition to his Olympic achievements, Carly has a history of performance at world events, having won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics and participating in winning teams for relay events in the past few years.
He was a member of the 4x100m team in Paris but was ultimately disqualified due to a failed handoff, a detail that many might recall considering Lyles was to participate but fell ill with Covid earlier that week.
