Release of American Pilot from Chilean Detention
An American pilot and social media influencer, 20-year-old Ethan Guo from Tennessee, was recently released from detention in Chile after spending over two months in custody. Guo’s aims for his trip included raising $1 million for cancer research, but things took a sharp turn when he landed in Antarctica without the necessary permission, allegedly using false flight planning documents.
Upon his return to Punta Arenas, Chile, aboard a naval vessel, Guo met with the media while donning a jersey from the Chilean national soccer team. He described his experience in detention as “mediocre” and characterized his situation as one of “limited freedom.” Yet, he was also quick to praise the Chilean people for their kindness, saying, “They took care of me. They taught me Spanish. They treated me like family.”
Authorities noted that Guo was permitted to fly from Punta Arenas to a location further south, but instead flew directly into Antarctica. His lawyer, Jaime Barientos, reported to the Associated Press that the flight had to be diverted due to poor weather, claiming he believed Guo had received authorization to land there.
Interestingly, Guo was arrested just before he was about to head back to Punta Arenas. Last month, the charges against him were dropped, and he was finally freed. However, he now faces a requirement to donate tens of thousands of dollars raised for cancer charities within the next 30 days. Additionally, he is barred from returning to Chile for three years and must leave the country immediately.
During his time on King George Island in Antarctica, Guo faced temperatures that plummeted below zero, compounded by limited communication as the Chilean government and his legal team worked to resolve the case. He notably celebrated his 20th birthday while in custody in July.
